Pastor Tatum is facilitator of “The Healthy Church” Leadership Workshop at the Spring Board Meeting of our Baptist State Convention which convenes April 26-28 in Joliet, Illinois.

The Administration Ministry will host its 4^th Ministry Conference on Saturday, May 8, at 10 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall. Bro. Robert Morris is Director of this Ministry. Breakfast will be served. Canaan Boy Scout Troop 402 is sponsoring a Garage Sale on Saturday, May 8, from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. on the corner of Central and Main Streets in Urbana (across the street from the Church). All proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to defray expenses for Summer Camp.

Sisters Ruthie Hillman and Alicia Lowery were among 12 Christian women honored last week to receive a Dorcas Award for community service.

The Spring Concert for Afro 498 WS music course is May 3 at 7 P.M. at Salem Baptist Church. This Community Outreach Class is taught by Willie T. Summerville and is under the auspices of the University of Illinois Department of African American Studies.

Pastor Tatum will conduct a New Members’ Orientation Saturday, April 17, at 11:00 A.M. in the Church sanctuary.  All members who recently united with Canaan, or who have never attended an Orientation, are urged to be present.

 

 

The Discovery Assurance Class will begin Sunday, April 18, at 8:30 A.M. on the lower level of the Administrative Office Building (the brown building adjacent to the church).

As we come to the close of Black History Month today, may we be reminded that our Black Heritage and major contributions of Blacks to the world's culture are a part of God's benevolent love toward us.  Love is the power that binds us together in the unity of the Spirit.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "There is amazing power in unity.  Where there is true unity, every effort to disunite only serves to strengthen the unity."

The 13^th Annual SAFE House Benefit Concert is this afternoon at 4:00 P.M. This Celebration of Music will be held at First United Methodist Church, 210 W. Church Street in Champaign. The University of Illinois Black Chorus is the special guest.  Dr. Ollie Watts Davis is Director. Canaan Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church are co-sponsors.

Pastor Tatum is the guest speaker at Glory Center International Church on Tuesday, March 2, at 7:00 P.M. in observance of their 5^th Anniversary.  The location is 606 N. Country Fair Drive in Champaign.  The Canaan family is asked to accompany our Pastor en masse.

Congratulations to Dr. Stephanie Tatum who has been selected to receive the Ann Meyers Award from the New York State Association for Women in Administration (NYSAWA).   This prestigious award is given to recognize expertise in mentoring educational leaders. Dr. Tatum is an Associate Professor at Dowling College in New York.

We applaud our Canaan Academy Students for their humanitarian effort!  The 2^nd and 3^rd grade class held a bake sale and donated the $600 proceeds to aid the Haiti Earthquake victims.  The students presented the check to a representative of the American Red Cross Relief Fund.

L'Rufus Mitchell is instrumental in Operation: Backpack which provides essentials for the Haiti Earthquake victims.  Persons interested in providing supplies may contact l'Rufus at 217.722.7471.

The Greeters Ministry will meet Saturday, March 6, at 10:30 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall.  All members are asked to be present.

The Women's Auxiliary Retreat of Baptist General State Convention of Illinois is March 25-27, 2010, in Peoria, Illinois.  Sis. Barbara Tatum is facilitator of the Workshop, "Forgiveness Is For Me."

The month of February represents a season of love and Black History.  As we observe Black History Month and Valentine's Day, may we be reminded that the message of Love is an all-inclusive Gospel that continues 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, 8,760 hours, each year!

The 13^th Annual SAFE House Winter Concert is Sunday, February 28, at 4:00 P.M.  This fund-raising event will be held at First United Methodist Church, 210 W. Church Street in Champaign.  Canaan Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church of Champaign are co-sponsors.

A Substance Abuse Leadership and Recovery Conference will be held February 20 at First Christian Church in Champaign.  Pastor Tatum is one of the presenters.

The "Women's Circle" will meet Saturday, February 27, from 4-6 P.M. This monthly fellowship, under the auspices of Canaan's Women's Ministry, seeks to engage, encourage, and empower women to fulfill God's purpose in their lives and serve Him in excellence and in truth.

In preparation for the 40-Day Fast, Pastor Tatum asks all Canaanites to participate in a 7-day Media Fast, beginning  Wednesday, February 17, and ending  Wednesday, February 24.  This is a time when we abstain from exposure to the media, especially television viewing, so we can clear our minds for solitary refinement.  Solitude, quiet, and being set apart from the distractions of this world are vital to hearing God speak.
